Company BBQ 2009: Lawn in 60 seconds!

24 July 2009, the last day before the summer holidays. Since 1998 this day is used to really clear out and clean the workshops, so every one can start work again after the holidays on a clean and tidy work bench or desk. If all is clean and tidy the barbecue is lit and the holidays can start... however, this year not yet...

First there is the Broveco BBQ 2009 "Lawn in 60 seconds" lawnmower race; 3 Teams, 1 week, 300 Euro per team and an equal chance to victory and eternal fame. A race over 5 laps on the Broveco street circuit, a drag race over 100m and a sprint race with 180 degree turn. A BBQ with only beer and beef is boring, right!?!


On Monday morning 20 July 3 second hand lawn mowers purchased over the weekend are wheeled in the workshop. Mowing units are removed, drive pullies are exchanged, disc brakes are fitted, exhaust systems are converted and lots more. After the first test runs on Wednesday each team decides to reinforce the front suspensions, for the lawnmowers appear to be very difficult to drive at speeds in access of 50 km/h! Each team finds out that the road to eternal fame is not without obstacles, for most technical problems are solved only minutes before the start of the spectacle.

It’s time for the first race over 5 laps. Protective clothes and helmets are put on. Gentlemen start your engines! Thundering sound of eager horses. Two mowers dash off. The third, the yellow Stiga from the Office team, pulls away bouncing and seizes after only half a lap. The second gear has decided to part with the rest of the gearbox and found its’ out way through the aluminum casing. For the other two machines the race continuous and is won by the MF of the Assembly team.

Also the drag- and sprint race are won by the Assembly team. The Construction team ends on a well deserved second place. Have a nice holiday!
